In slanting November rain,
we watch you in formation
all in rows alike,
but we know you each,
can find you in the dark.
You shake the hand
of the General
while we stand, shaking
hands tucked under our arms
crossed against your leaving.

Still in line, you walk
into a pool of misted light,
step on to the bus,
and still we know you each,
can find you behind the glass,
see the trickled shadows
of rain on your cheeks.

We watch until you depart
in a cloud of diesel fumes.
Red taillights wink
a mocking trail
on wet asphalt.
