I DID A SOLDIER’S JOB TODAY

by Tom Bixby

I did a soldier’s job today

And killed a mother’s son

He bled and bled

But not for very long

His eyes were open wide

But I knew he couldn’t see

He held a rifle in his hand

Some monster’d put it there

The hand was soft, an artist’s hand

An artist just like me
