AUNTIE’S FREEDOM DANCE circa 1960

by Jeanine DeHoney

Auntie says

Suga’ do it dis way

kick off dem shoes

push back dat sofa

slide across dat floor

dance through dem doors.

Move dem hips nice and slow

hold dat head up ta de sun

stretch dem arms like dem wings

this is how you get set free.

Come on now suga’ do the Jerk

Twist and Shout like Chubby Checker

go head and do that Watusi

aint no drownin’ here

you better put your goggles on and Swim

and I better not get wind to you doing it on the highway

but Suga’ you can do the Hitch Hike on this here dance floor.

Auntie says

life aint been no cakewalk for her

but when she dance

dem fetters

fall off of her like beads of bathwater

and dem ghosts stop

tauntin’ her.

Auntie says

don’t ever fret

bout lookin’ a fool

cause God don’t care

as long as your soul got holy jewels

So, I kick off dem shoes

push back dat sofa,

slide across dat floor

dance through dat door

cause freedom’s awaitin’ me

sweet freedom’s awaitin’ me

if I keep my head ta da sun.
