MOTORCYCLIST
by Matthew Edlund
Blew out my knees in football
Busted my hands in bars
Crushed my back unloading hot trucks
Cleared my head with pure grain liquor
How I miss it so
Now I fall off my walker
Talk like a toad
My throat stores thirty years of smoke
I eat more pills than food
What can you do when you hurt and can’t move?
But some things still move me
Make me want to wake each morning
My bike kickstarts life
Its frame my new back
Airbox my new throat
Disc brakes take the place of knees
Pistons pump my new heart
I feel their beat in every turn
I got a new body but it needs a brain
My bike follows my head
Each highway a sea without shores
I can race the whole country
I can rule any road
I thought I was free but I never was
Not till now when I’m not much
A disabled ghost
Yet the air my engine steals
Spins my soul through its two wheels
This sky, these trees, this grass
They’re mine
As free as I can be
You’ll hear me before you see me
And I’m way too fast to stop
